My journey with martial arts began over three decades ago. Then in 2006, when I had already achieved a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Wado Ryu Karate. Eager to share this passion with my son, Mitch, I introduced him to this art form, envisioning it as a wonderful way for us to bond.
However, things didn't quite go as planned. Mitch found the repetitive exercises tedious and felt out of place among older children and some intimidating adults in the class. He wanted to quit!
Realizing that this traditional approach wasn't fitting for him, I faced a choice: let him quit or adapt to his needs. Choosing the latter, I decided to create a martial arts environment tailored for children.
Thus, in 2007, Team Black Belt was established, focusing on making Karate and other martial arts accessible, enjoyable, and age-appropriate for kids.
We blended core martial arts skills with fun games and high-energy classes, incorporating life lessons along the way.
Our unique approach resonated with many, and by 2008, we grew to over 250 students under 16, all through word-of-mouth.
This journey wasn't just about teaching martial arts; it was about adapting and evolving to nurture a love for this discipline in the younger generation.
